On December 10th and 11th, Fort Hamilton High School filled its auditorium with music and excitement as students presented their talents for the annual winter concert. The two-night event served as one of the art department’s biggest showcases of the year, allowing friends and family to take a glimpse at the work students pour into their classes.
Those who participated were from the various singing classes alongside the school’s multiple bands, all of which are in the arts department. Beyond the performances themselves, the concert highlighted the rigor and intention behind the department’s curriculum, allowing featured students to better understand why their classes demand so much discipline. The event not only celebrated their growth but also demonstrated how the program pushes students to refine their craft, collaborate, and rise to professional-level expectations.
There were a multitude of teachers involved in the creation of the concert; whether they taught vocal or instrumental, they all had major roles. One of those many teachers included Mr. Mulligan, a band teacher who believed that the effort his students put into the rehearsal time truly showed through in their performance, revealing the importance of practice.
“As a musician, performing is the essence of our craft,” said Mr. Mulligan. “Just like an athlete, we practice and work out for an end goal, which would be a game or match. Performing in a concert is the ultimate culmination of the rehearsals and practice we have done. It shows our audience that hard work does matter and great results are possible through dedication.”
Alongside the teachers, the students stepped into the spotlight and made their mark on the concert. Among the many students who reflected on their personal experiences, Kerrigan Fitzpatrick, a senior in mixed choir, noted that she felt a sense of fulfillment with all that she has done in class and that anything is possible with a little bit of effort. Understanding everything after the fact gave her the feeling of belonging and a newfound love for the art.
“I think the importance of the concert is to show everyone that anyone can do anything,” Fitzpatrick said. “It’s a way to show your accomplishments and something you genuinely enjoy doing. The concert is a good opportunity for students because it can help them find a new interest or activity that they can do for the rest of their lives.”
While performers experienced the event from the stage, those in the audience had their own perspective on the performance. There were many for those who attended, but for junior Stephanie Saltos, her purpose was to recognize the efforts of those she calls friends. Aside from celebrating her peers’ work, she found a sense of community within Fort’s art department.
“I intended to go to support and to appreciate the musical arts Fort Hamilton provides,” Saltos said. “The unity within the music and how everyone’s instruments enhanced the performance and the experience was an important takeaway for me.”
In the end, when the lights dimmed and the doors closed, the winter concert proved to be more than just a showcase of talent; it was a reminder of how far a little bit of effort goes. It stood as a testament to the dedication of both students and teachers, a moment where their collaboration grew into something larger than any single voice or instrument ever could have created alone.
