Under the colorful lights of Fort Hamilton High School’s auditorium, the Chinese Student Organization hosted its annual Lunar New Year Celebration on February 27th, 2026. The event was created to honor long standing traditions while showcasing the rich cultural diversity within the school community.
Throughout the evening, teachers and students from across Fort Hamilton’s Asian community took the stage with a variety of performances. These acts highlighted music, dance and cultural expression from different Asian backgrounds, giving the audience a vibrant look into the traditions connected to the Lunar New Year. The celebration brought students, families and staff together in a warm, festive atmosphere that reflected both cultural pride and community spirit.
Among the many staff members who helped make the celebration possible were Ms. Masilongan, the co-adviser of the Chinese Student Organization, and Mr. Li. Her guidance, organization and behind-the-scenes support played a major role in bringing the event to life. From coordinating rehearsals to encouraging student performers, she helped create an environment where students felt confident sharing their culture with the school community.
“I think this event is important to host because it raises cultural awareness within the Fort community,” Ms. Masilongan said. “I was amazed by how well the students did during the mandatory dress rehearsals, how they decorated the stage and auditorium, and most importantly, how proud they were to represent their culture to a large audience.”
Alongside the dedicated staff members, student performers worked tirelessly to bring the Lunar New Year Celebration to life, one of them being Wendy Li, a junior at Fort Hamilton. Although most members, including Li, speak English, many still face challenges with the language. Even with that setback, everyone involved managed to support one another, enjoy the experience and express the shared pride they have in their culture. The celebration became not just a performance, but also a moment of connection where students could honor their heritage while building confidence and community together.
“The process for my friends and I during the show was that everyone was so supportive and kind to us regardless of the language barrier,” Li said. “Many of us who performed in the saja girls segment didn’t understand the language that they spoke, yet they were super accommodating and attentive.”
The crowd was packed with people from all different backgrounds who came together to support the performers. Among them was Sophia Yip, a junior at Fort Hamilton, who attended the celebration to cheer on her friends and immerse herself in the cultural festivities. Despite not performing, she said she felt deeply connected to the energy in the room.
“I simply decided to go to support my friends but didn’t expect to connect that much with my culture,” Yip said. “I would consider myself distant from my Chinese heritage compared to most and this show was a great way to learn more and connect with people.”
The Lunar New Year Celebration at Fort Hamilton High School became far more than a night of performances; it was a living reminder of how culture, community and student leadership can transform a school into a shared home. From the dedication of advisers to the courage of student performers and the enthusiasm of attendees, the event showcased the power of unity in a diverse community. As the final applause echoed through the auditorium, it was clear that the celebration didn’t just honor tradition; it strengthened the bonds that make Fort Hamilton a place where every student’s heritage is valued, supported and proudly seen.
