It’s one thing to be a great athlete on the field, but to also be an outstanding student is an impressive and noteworthy feat. One of Fort’s very own student-athletes was recognized for doing just that.
On December 12, 2025, senior Abigail Hom, the Student Organization President and a leading member of the Girls’ Flag Football Team, was awarded the prestigious Public Schools Athletic League (PSAL) MVP Scholar-Athlete Award.
This award honors star athletes who have excelled academically, recognizing their extraordinary leadership and steadfast commitment to their sports and schoolwork. In order to qualify for this honor, students must maintain a GPA of 90% or higher and be nominated by their coaches.
Every year, 55 students (11 from each borough) are honored. The award ceremony and annual dinner takes place at Yankee Stadium, as the New York Yankees and Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl sponsor the event.
“Standing up there and looking around at all the other student-athletes like me made me feel happy that we were recognized for our dedication and hard work,” Hom said. “I was very grateful that Coach Beruldsen nominated me.”
Although the ceremony was a serious and formal event, there was a moment of levity when PSAL Senior Executive Director Danny Harris threw Hom a football as he announced her name. It was a moment that made her extremely proud and one that she will not forget.
One person who appreciates Hom’s work ethic and leadership qualities is Mrs. Russo, Fort’s Coordinator of Student Activities who advises Student Government and works with her on a daily basis.
“Abby leads not by title, but by example – listening first, lifting others and bringing people together with understanding, kindness and collaborations,” said Mrs. Russo. “Her biggest flex is her heart and willingness to do whatever it takes to make others feel supported so everyone can succeed. She is truly special in every aspect of her life.”
While still focusing on her studies and numerous responsibilities, Hom has high hopes for the upcoming flag football season.
“I’m very excited as it is my senior year and my fourth season on the team,” she said. “I see us making the playoffs and hopefully winning our senior night game.”
Although she has many responsibilities, such as being the president of our school, attending meetings and keeping up with her AP and honors classes, Hom is determined to continue being a leader on the team and giving her all on the field.
“One goal I have for the upcoming season is to become a great quarterback as it is my first and final year playing this position,” she said. “After receiving the scholar-athlete award, it gives me the idea to possibly consider continuing my flag football career in college.”
There is no doubt that Hom will accomplish her goals, and that the experience of being honored with such a prestigious award will continue to motivate and inspire her.
