Fort Hamilton’s newest math teacher brings with him five years of experience and a unique new teaching style. Mr. Paucar, hailing from Queens, starts the sixth year of his teaching career as an Algebra 1 teacher at Fort. He is transferring from a charter school in Queens, where he taught geometry.
Since high school, Mr. Paucar had a gift for mathematics, which he eventually directed toward teaching. He’d jumped around, taking a gap year after high school and originally teaching English as in Argentina. Although he considered other subjects, like government or photography, he settled on Mathematics and began his undergrad at Brooklyn College. He graduated from City College with his degree in math education. At his first teaching job, he cited the assistant principal as a source of inspiration and guidance for him.
He’s been drawn to Fort all his life, wishing to attend it as a student, and he now recognizes what it offers him as a teacher, with its abundance of courses. He wishes to teach as many math courses as he can, working his way up to advanced placement courses, and along the way to teach by his philosophy of “experiment and learn.” Mr. Paucar lives by his own way of teaching—believing that if he gives his students just enough information to figure it out on their own, they will gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for math.
Mr. Paucar strives to be not just a teacher, but a friend as well, wishing to make his students feel “seen and heard.” He wants his Algebra 1 class to be not just enriching, but also welcoming, with an emphasis on helping his students at least appreciate what math can be, rather than just study it mindlessly.
In the meantime, Mr. Paucar looks forward to becoming a member of the Fort community and seeing where his time at Fort Hamilton leads him.
