As the holiday season approaches, and winter arrives, fall sports at Fort Hamilton have officially come to an end. There were many reasons to be satisfied with this season, as Fort athletes competed at the highest level, demonstrating grit, determination, and teamwork. As the calendar moves toward winter sports, here’s a look at how some of our teams performed.
After reaching the PSAL Boys Varsity Soccer Championship last year, but falling short to James Madison, the Tigers bounced back with a strong season, going 5-2 in the 3A-Brooklyn II Division. After defeating John Adams 4-0 in the first round of the playoffs, the team lost to Flushing Campus 1-0, marking the end of their season.
The Tigers were led by seniors Alexander Fotakos and Gianluca Convertini and junior Bryan Carillo. While the team is losing many notable seniors next year, Coach Khodorkovsky is hopeful for the future, believing the returning members have the ability and character to succeed next fall.
Meanwhile, the Girls Varsity Volleyball team proved to be dominant during the regular season, finishing with a 10-0 record. Coach Richard Sherry’s squad only lost one set the entire season. The team’s momentum continued, as they rolled over Long Island City, John F. Kennedy Campus, Bronx High School of Science, and Francis Lewis, also losing only one set during those playoff matches. Before the championship game, on Friday, November 22nd, Fort Hamilton held a pep rally to celebrate the girls’ success and encouraged them as they prepared for their championship game against John Jay Campus. A raucous crowd filled the auditorium to wish the team on to victory and congratulate them on a successful year.
Unfortunately, their strong season came to an end as the Lady Tigers lost in the finals at Borough of Manhattan Community College two days later. Despite the loss, Coach Sherry couldn’t hide how proud he was of the team’s hard work, togetherness, and passion throughout the season.
Finally, on the football field, Coach Daniel Perez’s Varsity Tigers went 7-1 throughout the regular season, securing the number one seed in the Division 3A Playoffs. The Tigers outscored their competition 73-22 in the first two rounds of the playoffs against John Jay Campus and Harry S. Truman.
However, the team lost to Brooklyn Tech in a nail-biter championship game, with a score of 37-36. The game, which took place at the Old Boys and Girls High School athletic field, was full of ups and downs, with both teams trading scores on what was a cold and windy day. The Tigers’ fate was sealed when the potential game-winning field goal drifted wide-left in the closing seconds, giving Brooklyn Tech the title. This year’s team was led by star quarterback Aiden Farley, running back Harold Marshall III, and speedy wideout August Porter. While many were disappointed by the outcome, it is clear that Coach Perez’s program is headed in the right direction, and the future of Tigers football is bright.
Now, as winter approaches, footballs are exchanged for basketballs and spring sports loom closer. There is much to look forward to in the next few months. For our fall teams, they will have to wait until next year to finish what they started.
