Fort Hamilton High School is a warm place that kids and staff can call home. This certainly is the case for new teacher Ms. Mariya Kobryn, an alumna of Fort Hamilton who has returned as a special education teacher. A former teacher of elementary and middle school students, Ms. Kobryn is excited to work with high school students.
Ms. Kobryn’s path to a career in education was shaped by her upbringing. Growing up in Ukraine and moving to the United States at the age of seven, she didn’t know English and had to adjust to American customs. This is why she works in special education, to give students who need the extra help a voice. She hopes to be her kids’ voices while giving them everything they need just like her teachers did for her.
Her previous teachers, even some of whom were from Fort Hamilton, inspired her dream of becoming a teacher. She was able to work with some of the very teachers who inspired her in the first place.
“Having a relationship with former teachers is the best thing to have,” Ms. Kobryn said. Building special connections with students she works with is a main priority for her, but she also wants to build relationships with other teachers across the different departments within our school.
Ms. Kobryn is not just a teacher; she’s a beacon of inspiration with a touching story. Throughout this, we’ve explored her remarkable dedication to her students, which will surely have a profound impact on our school community.
