On February 12th, 2025, students gathered at Fort Hamilton High School’s pool balcony with bags in hand, browsing tables of clothes. From periods 9 to 11, all students and staff were welcome to the annual Clothing Swap. Student Government and Leadership hosted the event after collecting student donations for the past month. The event boasted a large array of clothing, from shoes, shirts, and jeans to dresses and sweaters.
The Clothing Swap promoted the recycling of clothing, which is among the largest contributors to landfill waste. It provided students an opportunity to donate clothes instead of ridding them via trash, and also presented the means for students to get clothes for free.
One of the attendees of the event, senior Jasmine Garcia Lopez, said that this was her first time at the Clothing Swap.
“I didn’t go last year, but I did hear about it,” she told The Pilot. “I decided to go this year at Fort Hamilton, and I am getting the full experience of being a senior by participating in these events.
“I got to see a lot of my friends there,” Lopez added. “I got to interact with a lot of other students, as well. It sort of felt like a mini shopping experience, and I had a blast with my friends.”
The Club Fair is certainly one of the many exciting events that Fort Hamilton has to offer, as it provides opportunity for students and staff who are possibly in need of more clothes, or for those who are simply interested in adding new pieces to their closets. The event also promotes the recycling of textiles, minimizing the amount of waste and encouraging Fort Hamilton students to think twice before throwing out their old wardrobe.
