With the school year coming to a close and class programming for the next already in its incipient stage, students at Fort Hamilton are looking forward to the future.
Many students are uncertain about what they would like to study in the future, and are therefore unsure about what classes would best prepare them for college. Others may be secure in their goals and might be seeking hands-on experience that will prepare them for the futures they want.
Fort Hamilton offers a program that can teach students what they need to know and more, with plenty of opportunities to develop and refine key life skills for those who are willing. This is the Virtual Enterprise program.
Virtual Enterprise is an elective class available for seniors and unlike any other program at the school. It allows students to run a simulated business and supports them as they learn the different aspects of how it works. The majority of class is spent on developing this business. Students design websites, make sales, compete in competitions, and partake in more projects that they cannot do in any other class.
The best part of the class itself is the freedom to work with peers as fellow entrepreneurs and make new connections. The course is industry driven, with a significant focus on technology and real-world applications that can aid students as they enter jobs of their own.
Each year the program has a different company, unique and catered to the needs of the youth. This year, the class has unveiled Melting Pint, an ice cream company with a delectable twist. Rather than conventional flavors that have been done for years on end, the business takes full advantage of the cultural diversity of Fort Hamilton and creates something truly distinctive. They use cultural dishes from around the world and combine them with the finest ice cream to create a truly modern final product.
This year’s company were semi-finalists in the Virtual Enterprise National Competition and placed in the top twenty of the country. Melting Pint is a company that understands the people because its students are in a program that understands them. Virtual Enterprise is working to shape the young minds of the next generation because they are the ones who will be bringing to the world what’s next.
