Climbing mountains may seem daunting to some, but not for our new earth science teacher Mr. Ryan McKeon. Invigorated by his love for our planet and the solar system, Mr. McKeon has been teaching for 15 years, educating students about Earth and outer space. Incorporating many of his adventures into his lessons, Mr. McKeon showcases the beauty of our planet by sharing his personal experiences and journeys.
“Studying Geology as a professional requires you to go deep into the most remote places on our planet,” he said. “I backpack into these places, stay for days, climb the beautiful peaks and take pictures which are used for virtual field trips in the classroom.” His love for earth science developed at a young age and has transformed into a passion, which he shares with students. He strives everyday to make sure students understand and appreciate the wonders of our universe.
Mr. McKeon is guided by his personal teaching philosophy that in order to teach, he must venture into the world to learn first-hand about the things he has read about in books, which he seeks to teach his students. This principle has steered him from his early teaching days at William E. Grady High School and then later at Origins High School to his new surroundings at Fort.
When asked why he decided to eventually come to Fort, he said, “I chose Fort Hamilton because I have several friends, which I have known for over 10 years, who spoke highly of the school. When I visited, I saw the sort of school culture I believe brings out the best in young people as well as brings out the best in its staff.”
Mr. McKeon is quick to point out how happy he is with his decision, as he was quickly able to transition to a new school, one that he claims has welcomed him with open arms.
“The feeling of welcomeness and belonging has pervaded my first months here,” he said. “I have been encouraged by my new colleagues/friends and been given both positive and constructive feedback which I utilize to grow as a teacher. I have felt supported by everyone at Fort Hamilton and feel extremely lucky to have been given the opportunity to teach here.”
Mr. McKeon is quick to thank everyone for their patience, consideration, and for the welcoming, positive, and overwhelmingly good-natured interactions. However, anyone who is lucky to have him as a teacher or colleague is grateful to have someone as dedicated to his profession and willing to go above and beyond to make a difference in his new community.
