Ms. Sara Elhawary, a new English teacher at Fort Hamilton High School, is not new to Fort at all. She was a student here herself, a part of the class of 2013. Her return to Fort Hamilton as a freshman English teacher is rooted in her desire to give back to the diverse and welcoming community that reflects her time as a student.
Ms. Elhawary attended CUNY Hunter College, majoring in English Language Arts, with a minor in Adolescent Education. For her Master’s degree, she went back to Hunter and studied TESOL, or Teaching English for non-native Speakers.
Before teaching at Fort Hamilton, she taught sixth grade students at P.S./I.S. 30, The Mary White Ovington School, for six years. She reflects on this experience saying that it “provided a foundation for understanding the unique challenges and opportunities that arise during early adolescence. It also allowed me to refine my teaching methods and adapt to the evolving needs of students at different developmental stages.”
Many current Fort Hamilton students who were taught by Ms. Elhawary in middle school, remember her as a fun teacher who they were always able to rely on.
As an English teacher, Ms. Elhawary reflects on what she loves most about teaching literature. “I chose to teach English because literature has the power to transcend cultural boundaries and open minds to new perspectives,” she said. “English allows me to help students explore the richness of language and develop critical thinking skills through the analysis of literature.”
“Introducing students to captivating stories and guiding them to appreciate the nuances of language is immensely gratifying,” she added. “Watching their eyes light up when they connect with a character or understand the deeper meaning of a text is what makes teaching English so fulfilling for me.”
Passionate teachers are what really encourages students to learn. Ms. Elhawary’s passion for teaching is apparent in her outgoing and bubbly personality. She lights up every room she walks in with her smile and positivity.
Ms. Elhawary is also the advisor of The Existentialist Society, a discussion-based club rooted in deep thinking and uncovering one’s personal philosophy.
Ms. Elhawary’s dedication to the school does not go unnoticed. She adds, “I’m thrilled to be back teaching at my old high school! Returning to familiar grounds brings a sense of nostalgia and a deep connection to the community. It’s a fantastic opportunity to contribute to the growth and learning of new generations in a place that holds special memories for me.”
