With the coming of spring, Fort Hamilton High School has been appreciating the warm weather and blossoming trees. This appreciation has manifested itself in a series of initiatives that aim to help save both the earth and its people. The spring blood drive, taking place on April 9th, 2025, and Earth week, taking place from April 21, 2025 to April 25, 2025, have fulfilled that goal.
Leadership kicked off spring with the blood drive, during which 82 blood donations were made in the Room G38. Donors lined up as early as 7:30 a.m. to give blood. They came out with snacks, free t-shirts, “Be nice to me, I just donated blood” stickers and a sense of fulfillment knowing their sacrifice contributed to the saving of human lives.
“I think donating blood is important because it helps save lives,” said recurring donor and senior Khadijah Rahman. “Even though it’s a small act in my life that I do, I know the big impact it has on the people I help. If you qualify, then there shouldn’t be a reason not to.”
In total, the blood donated that day went on to help “as many as 216 patients in area hospitals,” as reported by New York Blood Center Account Manager, Javier Jimenez.
In the spirit of Earth Day, Fort Hamilton’s annual Earth Week, followed up on the school’s life-saving festivities, featuring a week-long celebration of the earth. From Monday to Friday, each day focused on a specific theme — Green Day, Tote Bag Tuesday, Water Bottle Wednesday, Thrifty Tuesday, and Earth, Wind, and Fire Day, respectively.
During the week, students were encouraged to participate in spirit days that aligned with each respective theme day and sign green pledges, vowing to make more sustainable choices in their everyday lives.
“Earth week is important as it encourages environmentally friendly behavior around the school,” said senior Devin Wong. “In today’s day and age, it’s incredibly easy to overlook the significant impact our behaviors have on the environment. Our spirit week allowed students to be creative and at the same time be more sustainable.”
April was a month for sustaining life at Fort Hamilton High School, reminding students and staff to make choices for a better future for all.
