Music. We hear it at the mall, in elevators, at grocery store checkout lines, and most of the time off of our phones. But have you ever thought about what it takes to make a song? The Record Room Club, a first-year club at Fort allows for you and your friends to write, perform, and record your own original songs. The club focuses on allowing students to let their artistic flags fly freely, homing in on talents that many students may have not been able to explore otherwise.
The club currently has ten members, but is looking to expand their reach to other students out there who would like to explore the art of creating music. Mr. Christian Lovrich, the faculty advisor of the club and a teacher here at Fort, told The Pilot exactly how the club was founded. Both he and the club’s student founder and senior, Emmett Farrell, decided to explore an ambition they both had of starting a new club. After playing together on stage for the annual Fort Rock Show back in June of last year, Mr. Lovrich and Ferrell began brainstorming ideas.
“Writing music has been one of the most powerful experiences of my life,” said Mr. Lovrich. “It has helped me navigate grief and loss and has also provided some of my best memories and relationships.”
Mr. Lovrich’s and Farrell’s chief goal was to allow kids to write and record their own music. With the help of Coordinator of Student Activities, Ms. Diana De Paula and Activities Coordinator, Mr. Joseph Alvear, this dream became a reality.
“I was inspired to found this club from my passion of playing the guitar and my desire to create my own music and bring individuals together despite their differences,” said Farrell.
The club offers students access to professional recording equipment to which many high schoolers wouldn’t have access anywhere else. They use an online recording software called Logic Pro to create samples and songs. As president of the club, Farrell gets to collaborate with and help club’s members make music. He enjoys getting to walk around answering questions, allowing students to voice their opinions on what type of music they would like to contribute to the group. At the moment, the club is almost finished completing a brand new single, written, performed, and recorded entirely by students. The single is slated to be released later this year.
Whenever a new club comes around at Fort, it is always exciting to see how it will work its way into so many different students’ lives. When asked what their hopes were for the new single, Mr. Lovrich and Farrell said they could not wait to share the project which has really been a long time coming.
“I hope that the people who hear our single will be as inspired as I was when witnessing firsthand what a group of creative and open-minded students can create together,” said Farrell.
In the meantime, Mr. Lovrich hopes to expand the club’s membership.
“I hope that the music that Record Room creates will be able to reach the ears of as many Fort students as possible, letting them know that at Fort they are not only welcome to express themselves, but that being an artist is one the best parts of being a human,” said Mr. Lovrich.
The Record Room Club meets on Tuesdays during 11th period in Room B31. Those interested can reach out to Mr. Lovrich at [email protected] for more information.
