Meet The Coach: Shawn Forthofer
Mr. Forthofer took over the girl’s swim team last year bringing the team from B division to A division. As the competitions become increasingly competitive, he prioritizes the girls’ enjoyment while motivating them to achieve their maximum potential. “I want to keep the girls happy, pushing them as much as possible making sure they enjoy coming to practice,” he told The Pilot.
Meet The Captains: Abigail Hom and Vasiliky Economakos
Both senior Vasiliky Economakos and junior Abigail Hom have been involved with the swim team since their freshman year. Their role as team captains includes assisting Coach Forthofer and providing helpful tips to the girls on the team to improve in their swimming skills. In addition, Hom and Economakos contribute to helping with lineups at meets. They provide the girls with the chance to compete and encourage them to challenge themselves during both meets and practice.
Meet Two Members: Norah McKee and Serena Liu
Junior Norah McKee and senior Serena Liu joined the team during their sophomore year. “I was really inspired by my parents, ” Liu said. “They saw my passion for swimming and encouraged me to join the swim team.”
Both McKee and Liu started swimming when they were seven. In fact, McKee, along with team captain Hom, started swimming together at the pool of Fort Hamilton High School when they were just seven years old, reflecting the closeness of the team. “Everyone is very supportive, making showing up to practice very fun and entertaining,” McKee said.
