Fort Hamilton’s National Honors Society held its annual Bowling Night at Melody Lanes on April 17th, 2024. The event, organized by the philanthropy chair, raised funds for the Joseph Graffagino Scholarship.
Ava Canadè, recording secretary of NHS, noted that this enhanced the enjoyment students felt throughout the event. “The Joseph Graffagnino Scholarship is a great scholarship at Fort Hamilton that I was glad to be able to support,” she said. “Bowling Night was a great way to have a fun event for NHS that allowed participants to have a night of fun, especially during the lead-up to AP exams.”
Other NHS members agreed. “Enjoying a moment while helping others really does make the event more special,” said NHS member Jason Jiang. “Not only did most people have fun and enjoy hanging out with their friends, but the fees that were paid could make a difference in another’s life.”
Another junior and NHS member, Devin Wong, noted that the event allowed him to decompress prior to the start of AP exams. “I had an AP Chemistry exam the day after the Bowling Night,” Wong said. “However, I was able to not stress about the test and just have fun for a few hours.”
One team, jokingly titled the “Team of Effort,” ended up getting numerous gutterballs, delaying each round. In spite of this, Jiang, a member of the team, noted that this streak of gutterballs, along with the constant rushing to the main desk to ask for help, was most likely the most memorable moment for him of the event. “Although it was sad and terrifying each time, it was funny and memorable at the same time,” he said.
Canadé found the experience equally entertaining. “I would say the most memorable moment of the Bowling Night event was watching some of my fellow e-board members bowl and seeing their very different styles of bowling from mine,” she said. “It was really fun to bowl with them since we have only done it once before prior to the start of this school year.”
NHS has continued to hold events throughout the school year to promote community and philanthropy, including various trivia events as well as their Edward Nogay Student-Faculty Basketball Tournament.
