Fort Hamilton’s Muslim Student Association hosted an Iftar in the cafeteria on Thursday, April 5th, 2024 to celebrate Ramadan.
Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic lunar calendar, a sacred time for Muslim people. During this month, Muslims are required to fast during the day, after sunrise until before sunset. Iftar refers to the meal Muslims in Ramadan eat after sunset to break their fast.
For Muslims, Ramadan is about strengthening one’s relationship with God. “Iftar is when we break our fast after sunset,” explained Mariam Zahran, MSA e-board member. “Most Muslims cherish this moment because it brings joy to many families who are uniting together for a meal.”
The annual Iftar is one of the MSA’s most important events of the year. This year’s Iftar was well-attended, and students were treated with food and a warm, friendly atmosphere where they could celebrate Ramadan together.
“I would say that Iftar night this year was definitely a success,” said Zahran. “It went very smoothly and food was more than enough for everyone. It made me extra happy since I feel like Muslims at Fort Hamilton lack representation.”
Although Iftar is observed primarily by Muslims in Ramadan, Zahran wants the Fort community to know that any student can attend, irrespective of their religion.
“Preparing for the Iftar Night is our favorite time of the year,” said Zahran. “ We spread the word to gather more people because everyone is welcome.”
The MSA strives to provide Fort Hamilton’s Muslim students with a safe and welcoming space, as well as to make them feel seen. “This is probably one of the only things that make us Muslims feel represented at Fort Hamilton,” added Zahran.
